Professor Davis is a recognised expert in the management of patients with hip and knee problems that require surgical replacement. He is an expert in the use and development of computer navigation and robotics, which improves the precision in which these operations can be performed. He is a self-confessed perfectionist, which first led him into the field of computer navigation and has now led him into the field of robotics in an effort to improve the outcomes for his patients. He performs a wide range of different replacements using different techniques and different types of hip and knee replacements to match the requirements of individual patient needs.

Professor Davis is also an expert in revision hip and knee replacement. He sees patients who have worn-out or painful hip and knee replacements and uses a number of different procedures, including the very latest techniques and materials to restore patients function.

Professor Davis holds his NHS appointment at the prestigious Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham and works in the world renowned arthroplasty unit, which was made famous by the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. His chair (professorship) is at the University of Birmingham, which was awarded in April 2015.

Professor Davis graduated from Birmingham University in 1996 and undertook his basic and higher surgical training in the West Midlands. He undertook a year’s fellowship in revision hip and knee arthroplasty in Toronto, Canada.

Professor Davis holds an MSc in Trauma and a postgraduate certificate in medical education as well as the FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics). He has a strong research background in both clinical and basic research. His research interests range from basic science research into finding drug therapies to cure osteoarthritis to the analysis of big data and improving the outcome of hip and knee replacements. He has spent his career developing new technologies in the field of computer navigation and robotics. He is also passionate about improving the quality of care patients receive during their inpatient stay and during their recovery and is involved in new sensor and digital technology to facilitate this, as well as working on new dressings used in the care of surgical patients.

Professor Davis was appointed as the Research and Development Director at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 2009 and built the department from a staff of one part time manager to a department of 19. The number of patients recruited into research studies significantly increased from 33 per year to over 1100. He stepped down from the R&D director role in 2016 and is now the National Institute for Health Research Clinic Lead for Orthopaedics in the West Midlands region. He has been and continues to be regularly invited faculty at national and international meetings on hip and knee replacement.

Professor Davis also works closely with orthopaedic implant companies in developing computer navigation/robotics and bearing surfaces in hip replacement in an effort to improve patient's outcomes following their surgery and to ensure that all care is optimised for his patients.

Professor Davis is actively involved in education and currently holds the title of Head of Academy at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital co-ordinating all undergraduate medical education. He is also the module lead for orthopaedics at the University of Birmingham. He is passionate about training future doctors to understand orthopaedics and has developed and evidenced orthopaedic training programmes for students.

Professor Davis is married and enjoys spending his free time with his wife and 3 children.
